For millennia Mankind has observed the free and natural flight of birds and dreamt of mastering the skies; of freeing himself from earthly bonds by overcoming gravity.  Chinese legend tells of Emperor Shun who, around 2230 B.C., donned the clothes of a bird to escape from prison.

From ancient Greece there is the famous yarn of a father and son imprisoned by King Minos of Crete, Icarus and Daedalus, who created feathered wings and attached them to their bodies with wax in order to glide away.  Leonardo Da Vinci, in 1485, made over 200 famous sketches of Flying Machines, and Samuel Johnson, in the 18th century, shared a dream of flight in the "Dissertation on the Art of Flying" in his story Rasselas.

Eventually, the world would experience the Wright Brothers' first powered flight on the sandy shores of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on 17 December 1903, bringing Da Vinci's sketch to life and awakening a new and exciting era for Humanity.
Worcester has itself played an important and unique role in the history of flight.  Dr. Robert H. Goddard was born in Worcester (5 October 1882) and is renowned as the Father of Modern Rocketry.  Goddard, an inventor and amateur pianist, attended South High School and earned his B.S. from WPI and PhD from Clark University where he taught in the Physics Department for many years. Goddard held 216 patents and built the first liquid-propellant rocket.  He launched the first successful rocket on his aunt Effie's farm in Auburn in 1926.
"Man must rise above the earth -- to the top of the atmosphere and beyond -- for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives."
